HAIR. v. a (l'h s'aspire.) Vouloir mal à quelqu'un. Haïr ses ennemis, les haïr mortellement, cruellement. haïr quelqu'un à mort, le haïr à la mort. haïr son prochain, le haïr. comme la peste, le haïr en diable. haïr les meschans. haïr les pecheurs.
On dit aussi dans le mesme sens. Haïr le vice. haïr le peché. haïr l'erreur. haïr le mensonge.
Il signifie aussi, Avoir aversion, avoir repugnance. Je hay les personnes de telle humeur. je les hay naturellement. je hay les compliments, les façons, les ceremonies. haïr les livres. haïr le travail. haïr à travailler. haïr la solitude. haïr la compagnie. il haït le vin, il n'en sçauroit boire.
On dit aussi; De toutes les choses dont on reçoit quelque incommodité, qu'On les hait. haïr le froid, le chaud.
Haïr, est de deux syllabes à l'infinitif, avec deux points sur l'I, & retient la mesme prononciation, & la mesme ortographe dans tous ses temps, hormis dans les trois personnes singulieres de l'indicatif, & dans la seconde personne singuliere de l'imperatif, où il n'est que d'une syllabe, & s'escrit sans les deux points, Je hay. tu hais. il hait. hay le vice.
